When we ask 'what is AI?', it often brings up anxieties about our future. Will I lose my job? Could AI take over? It's totally normal to feel, when AI seems to be developing so quickly, especially when you're an artist wondering if your creativity is being threatened.

Below are some conversations that are worth to look into.

As I study AI and Machine Learning, I believe that AI is inherently abstract for people to understand due to the fact that it’s based on code and algorithms. I think people inevitably have discomfort and anxiety about AI that leads to feeling distant between AI and themselves. How do you resolve that problem letting users understand and build trust with AI?

It is one that’s pretty broad-reaching depending on how someone is coming into something. A real common component to what you’re describing is just having clear use cases. If someone doesn’t know why they would use it or how they would use something, then they’re not going to use it, and then they are going to form their own opinions around it. We tell use cases about how businesses are using it. We’ve started a few initiatives with folks on Instagram, like influencers talking about how they use it for creative writing or taking photographs, things like that. Trust is pretty huge for us. And so that also means saying what you’re going to do and holding yourself up to the ethics and guidelines that you set forth with yourself. And there are quite a few things that Anthropic has put in place to make sure that we develop things safely. One of those is our responsible scaling policy, which is almost like a set of rules that we will say if we’re developing a model and it breaks some of these things, we’re not going to release it because that means it’s not safe. It could be super powerful, it could give us a ton of money, but we are not going to release it until it is safe. And we develop that ahead of time and everybody abided by it. So we have a variety of different things like that internally to make sure that we’re holding ourselves accountable.

With fast-changing AI industry where even researchers finding out new information about models that they didn't know before, how do you cope with that as a design language? 

One of our sayings at work is "doing the simple thing that works." And so perhaps you can see that through the visual language of how both Claude and also the larger Anthropic brand are built. We have a lot of hand-done sketches because it's simple, but it can also communicate something pretty effectively and quickly. It's like, why do something more? The technology is already complex enough. And so that's been the way we've developed the brand probably since day one. 

Claude was built and trained with a bit more of a personality and an actual internal constitution behind it, and I think that sense of humanity has both set it apart but also set its brand and identity up for a trajectory that it's been on for a while.

Looking at different perspectives, from modern thinkers like Rick Ruben to more traditional approaches, I've come to see AI differently. At its heart, AI is just another tool that can make our work better and easier, whether you're an artist or not. Like any good tool, it's there to help us create, not replace what makes us human.
